Dear Neighbors,
My interest in neighborhood history has continued to grow since regularly blogging about it on these pages. I’m now beginning a research project to document the commercial businesses—past and present—of our area. I’m posting today to ask for your help with a short survey to build a registry of favorite local businesses.
From the Horn & Hardart Automat to the Movie Place—what do you miss most? Where did you shop locally? Do you remember the Abbey Pub, Oppenheimer Meats, or the Green Farm? What restaurants would you time travel to eat at again?
This is an opportunity to share your memories of neighborhood Mom & Pop businesses, as well as your appreciation for those that are still with us.
Gil Tauber, another neighborhood history enthusiast, and I are crowdsourcing memories of local stores and restaurants from West 96th to West 110th Streets. With your permission, your responses will contribute to historical research and related projects we are both working on.
