2025 Resources for Those Seeking Food Assistance and Those Looking to Donate to or Volunteer with Food-Assistance Programs
SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM | SNAP
In 2023, 1.73 million New York City residents--about 21 percent of our population--received SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits to help purchase food, according to the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA). At NYC Health and Hospitals online, you can find links to emergency food, pantries, and other kinds of assistance at www.FindHelp.NYCHealthAndHospitals.org. Call the City Harvest Hunger Hotline at (866) 692-3663 or (866) 888-8777 in English or Spanish, and visit their online Food Map, which pinpoints food assistance programs throughout NYC at www.cityharvest.org/food-map. The emergency hotline for the Food Bank of New York is (212) 566-7855 or visit www.foodbanknyc.org.
FOOD-ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
These programs are available citywide, and some require an application process before receiving benefits. However, hunger happens in the now, so here is a partial list of food pantries and free meal resources right within or near our Bloomingdale neighborhood with locations, schedules, and contact info provided below.
Holy Name of Jesus and St. Gregory the Great Parish serves 450 nutritious lunches weekly through a program called, “The Sandwich Line” from 11 am to 2 pm Tuesday and Thursday at their Franciscan Community Center,

St. Michael’s Episcopal holds its “Saturday Kitchen” offering a free hot meal to all in need on Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 am.
Its Pilgrim Resource Center provides information on other food resources as well as a broad range of community support programs.

Frederick Douglass Houses in NYCHA addresses food insecurity with the help of organizations such as Project Eats and City Harvest on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 12 pm to 2 pm. The Ujamaa Community Fridge and Free Store is also located onsite.

West End Presbyterian Church offers their Mercy Ministry and Food Pantry on Sundays from 12 noon to 1 pm. ID required.

Ascension Food Pantry is run by the church’s religious education children every 3rd Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm. ID required.

St. John the Divine’s Cathedral Community Cares program serves breakfast on Sundays at 10 am and a hot sit-down lunch at 12:30 pm, as well as a take-away brown bag meal to approximately 600-700 people per month, distributing over 26,000 meals per year, and its Free Food Pantry is available Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 5 pm with a community fridge available outside these hours.
