The Bloomingdale Mom & Pop History Project
A Memory Project of Broadway's Past Small Businesses in the Bloomingdale Neighborhood from West 96th to West 106th Streets
By Caitlin Hawke
Remember The Movie Place? The Abbey Pub, Abalafia’s flowers, Positively 104th Street, Oppenheimer Meats, RCI, Green Farm, Tacita d'Oro, La Casita? Or maybe you go further back to the days of Hudes Deli, the Horn & Hardart Automat or so many others.
This page captures the start of a crowd-sourced memory project of small businesses that have graced our stretch of Broadway. Initiated in 2026 by a long-time neighbor, Caitlin Hawke, the project combines historical research and oral history. Caitlin is currently pursuing her masters of oral history at Columbia University. She is the newest columnist to take on the "On Broadway" column in our quarterly newsletter. A recipient of the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group's Jim Torain Award, for many years, Caitlin blogged about local history which led to a fascination with local entrepreneurs and the role played by Mom & Pops in our sense of community and connectedness to our neighborhood.
You are warmly invited to contribute your memories, additions and corrections to the list below. Please click here to share your memories. If you find errors below or want to share your additions by email, please write to Caitlin at: [email protected].
Acknowledgments: While a lot of the history below had been crowd-sourced from neighbors, without the Block Association's newsletter and "On Broadway" column, it would be significantly less rich. A huge word of thanks to columnists who reported "On Broadway" and most especially to David Reich whose tenure was characterized by his eagle eye and swiss-watch precision! Special mention, too, of Avery Hudson's motherlode; his index for our Block Association newsletters was a wealth of information. And a hat tip to Columbia's Spectator archives.

Methodological notes: Below you will find a north to south and block-by-block list of current businesses and their predecessors. The predecessors are listed in reverse chronological order (when order could be determined), but there are certainly gaps between some of the businesses listed. Further, this exercise is imprecise because occasionally storefronts share the same street number or a building is demolished and rebuilt with a new street number, eliminating old numbers.
