Frequently Asked Questions about the Annual Block Party
When is the 2024 Block Party?
This year it is June 15. There is no rain date. Fortunately, we have a track record of pretty glorious weather. But we need YOU to volunteer to guarantee the success of our 2024 sale.
What may or may I not sell?
Vendors may sell anything legal, except food and drink intended for immediate consumption. Used items sell best. You may sell original crafts or artwork, but bear in mind this is essentially a yard sale and items like this tend not to sell well.
What should I know about my space?
Vendor spaces are for private, residential customers’ use only. We will not rent space to “professional” vendors or to those selling prepared food intended for consumption at the event. Each space measures 10 feet wide by 8 feet deep. We do not rent half-spaces but you may share your space with others as you choose. You provide your own table and any display furniture.
Who benefits from the Block Party?
The Block Association raises money for its activities and programs by "renting" vendor spaces, selling food and drink and other items at their own booth space. You keep the proceeds from the sale of your own goods. Please consult with your accountant about any tax consequences your sales might have.
When is the deadline to become a vendor?
Please make sure to submit your signed vendor agreement and payment by June 7, 2024. Anyone wanting to request a space after that should contact [email protected]. No requests will be accepted on the day of the event.
Are there refunds or transfers of spaces allowed?
Your vendor signed agreement is a binding contract. We will not refund your cleared vendor payment. If you are unable to participate in the Block Party after you have signed an agreement and paid for your space, you may transfer your space so long as you provide advance notice to the Vendor Coordinator. If you must cancel and contact the Vendor Coordinator at least seven days in advance, and we are able to re-sell your space, we will refund 50% of your cleared vendor payment. There are no exceptions to this rule.
There is no refund if you do not show up on the day of the sale.
What happens if we cancel?
If we are forced to cancel due to the weather or some unforeseeable circumstance, a formal decision will be made no later than 9:00 p.m. on the Friday just before the sale. We will contact you to let you know if there is an unforeseen cancellation of the sale. If the Block Party is canceled, your fee will be refunded in full with a Block Association check.
Day of the Block Party:
When can we arrive?
You may start setting up after 8:30 a.m. on the date of the event. If you haven’t arrived by 9:30 or haven’t advised the Vendor Coordinator by then to communicate your estimated time of arrival, we will consider you a no-show and reassign your space.
If you are arriving by car with your merchandise, the block will be open between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. for your load-in. But your car MUST be off the block no later than 9:30 a.m. Please note that we CANNOT PROVIDE PARKING for vendors.
How do we know where our assigned space is?
The Vendor Coordinator will contact you a few days prior to the event to give you your space assignment. Spaces will be clearly marked and numbered with chalk, starting from West End Avenue and moving toward Riverside Drive. If you can’t locate the space, a Block Association volunteer will assist you. A master list will be available the day of the event.
What if there are parked cars on the block?
The Block Association makes every effort short of towing to remove parked cars from the block. Advisory signage will be posted the week of the event. The local police are entitled to ticket cars left on the block the day of the event. We have been quite successful in clearing the street for past events, but we cannot absolutely guarantee that your space will be car-free. We will try to assist you in every way, but if we’re sold out, we cannot reassign you to a car-free space. If your space has a car in it, please be aware that the driver may show up at any time and need to move off the block. We ask for your patience and understanding with this matter.
In case of emergencies:
The NYC Fire Department requires five feet free on either side of fire hydrants. The Police Department requires we leave enough room down the middle of the street for emergency vehicles to pass. Do not spill over into a fire hydrant space or too far into the street. Your assigned space measures 10 feet wide by 8 feet deep and will be clearly marked. If you are asked to pull your merchandise within your boundaries, you must comply.
After the Block Party
The Clean-up:
The Block Party ends exactly at 4:00 p.m. because we must vacate the street. You are entirely and solely responsible for clearing all trash and items from your space at the end of the day. You must NOT leave leftover items at the street corners. NYC Dept. of Sanitation rules require that you place recyclable items in appropriate containers which will be available at the end of the Block Party near the Block Association table in the middle of the block. Block Association volunteers will be available to help with bagging and disposing of trash. You may seek their assistance if you need it. If your space has not been cleaned by the end of the day, you will not be allowed to participate in next year’s event.
In Closing...
We are sure you will have a fun and profitable day. These rules and regulations have been carefully thought out to ensure that the day goes smoothly and successfully for all. We do insist on 100% compliance with these regulations. If you know you will not be able to comply fully, please do not participate in the event. Thanks!
