1879: West 104th Street and Columbus Avenue

Apologies to blog readers. This post got stuck in the pipeline of drafts from February. But here it is: a great shot of the 9th Avenue el. Our friends at the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group have an elegant post about it here. Built in 1878-79, this early mass transit option was the main driver for a big pre-turn of the century boom in development in Bloomingdale. The excellent blog "Ephemeral New York" also has many pictures of these tracks and stories about the el's development.
