Public Meeting to Be Held on West End Avenue Safety

7/25/2014

Since Jean Chambers's death on July 10th, there have already been a few changes at the dangerous intersection of West End Avenue and W. 95th Street, and apparently there are more changes afoot under the authority of the Department of Transportation.

CB7 and Councilmember Helen Rosenthal are planning a public meeting with DOT officials to discuss DOT's proposal with members of the public.  If you are concerned about traffic safety or pattern changes, you may wish to attend.

What:  Discussion of DOT proposal to improve safety on the West End Avenue corridor

When:  Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.

Whe
re:  P.S. M811 - The Mickey Mantle School at 466 West End Avenue between W. 82nd - 83rd Streets

Details:  Josh Ozeck (212) 839-6218 or jorzeck@dot.nyc.gov

I am interested in attending the Helen Rosenthal Public Meeting concerning the West End Avenue Corridor but I cannot find any information about the DOT's proposal to improve safety. Please send me the proposal and any comments you may have concerning the DOT's proposal. Please do not tell me to come to the meeting to find out. I want to know what the proposal is before the meeting. Thank you.

Eileen,
Don't attend if you don't want to. Here's the scoop from the WEPS site:

Dear WEPSians and Friends,

You may have received a notice of the upcoming Town Hall Meeting called with the aim of putting before the public a proposal to make changes in the traffic flow of West End Avenue.

You may have had some questions. WEPS certainly did. In order to get answers, WEPS spoke with
Community Coordinator
Josh Orzeck at DOT. Our primary questions were: Isn't this a bit sudden? What is proposed? And what is the purpose of the meeting?

Q: Why the short notice?
A: Josh pointed out that work on a best-practices traffic plan for WEA had been progressing but had been scheduled to be completed next year. Due to accidents on the Avenue, work on a proposal was pushed forward, and ergo, the Town Meeting.

Q:
What is the proposal?
A. WEPS was given an overview of a number of basic safety improvements that DOT thought might suit the situation. Details
will be
presented at the meeting
, but Josh wanted WEPS to convey to our members that DOT is committed to safety as their top priority and that they have a commitment to work with the community. They want and need the community's input and support as they move forward to safeguard the Avenue.

Q: So, I said, if this plan is already made up, what is the purpose of the meeting?
A. Ah, Josh said, this is not a plan, it is a proposal.
 The
purpose
 of the meeting
is for DOT
,
CB7 and the public to have a discussion
 together
, with suggestions
and comments flowing
back and forth among us all.

I asked:
So, it's really a proposal? In other words
,
what the pubic says at this meeting will not be just noise, it will matter?

YES, was the unequivocal answer

of the
Community Coordinator of the DOT.

So
neighbors and friends, loving the Avenue as we do, wanting pedestrians and drivers to be safe, being
citizens who care about our city, we should be sure that we are making wise, considered moves when we choose to make changes.

I know, it is short notice, but WEPS urges all who can to be at the Mickey Mantle School (WEA & 82 St) on Thursday, July 31, 6:30 pm -- we need as many heads put together as possible.

in community,
Erika

Dear Neighbor,

As we are all too aware, our community, especially West End Avenue, has been the site of many traffic-related tragedies in recent months. I hope you will join me this Thursday, July 31, for a presentation by the NYC Department of Transportation on the proposed West End Avenue redesign from 107th Street to 72nd Street. The meeting is sponsored by Council Member Helen Rosenthal and Community Board 7 and will take place at 6:30 pm at P.S. M811 - The Mickey Mantle School (466 West End Avenue - between 82nd & 83rd Streets). See the flyer for this event below.

In addition, at the state level I am introducing legislation to suspend the licenses of drivers who cause fatal pedestrian accidents. This past session I sponsored and passed a bill to reduce the default speed limit in NYC to 25 mph. You can read more about my efforts here.

Looking forward to seeing many of you around the district!

Very truly yours,

Daniel O'Donnell

Assembly Member
