1930s: West 102nd Street and Broadway

The restaurants of a Broadway near W. 104th Street circa 1910 included Old Vienna and New Vienna. But then came Old Algiers.
Back long ago, there was the Old Vienna and then the New Vienna -- both restaurants once right here in the catchment that I featured in a Throwback post a couple years back. I've been digging around to find more on those and in the process, I landed square in Old Algiers! Thanks to these matchbooks below, I feel sure that back in the day, all an armchair traveler had to do was make a quick call to ACademy2-3263 for a reservation at this place which conjures souks and ceiling fans, spice markets and hookahs, mezze and grillades. Then, too, there was the dancing and the open-all-night appeal.
